Meta Lead Forms vs Landing Pages: Which Is Better for a Service Business?

By

Quick answer

Meta instant forms usually bring more leads at a lower cost per lead, while landing pages bring fewer leads with more intent and more control. Use Higher Intent forms when you can call leads within minutes, and a landing page when buyers need to understand the offer first. Judge both on cost per client.

Meta lead forms usually bring more leads for less money, while landing pages usually bring fewer leads with more intent and give you more control. For most service businesses, the better choice depends on how fast you follow up and how much a client is worth. Use instant forms when you can call leads within minutes and qualify them on the phone, and use a landing page when buyers need to understand the offer before they enquire.

What is the difference between a Meta lead form and a landing page?

A Meta lead form (instant form) opens inside Facebook or Instagram, so the person never leaves the app. A landing page is a page on your own website that the ad sends people to, with your own form or booking calendar.

What are Higher Intent forms, and should you use them?

Meta offers two instant form types. Its guide to creating a lead ad says More Volume is for a form that is quick to fill out and submit on a mobile device, and Higher Intent adds a review step that gives people a chance to confirm their information. You choose the type when you create the form. Meta's lead ads feature availability page lists where each feature runs, so check it if you want Higher Intent forms to show on every placement.

For service businesses that call every lead, Higher Intent is usually worth testing. You may get fewer leads, but each one has at least looked at what they submitted. Meta also offers phone number verification with a one-time password, which helps when wrong numbers are a problem.

What do you need before running lead forms?

A privacy policy

Meta's help centre on privacy policies for lead ads says you need a privacy policy to run a lead ad, and you link to it in the form. Meta's recommendations and requirements for lead ads say the policy must be on your business website or app. The link cannot go straight to a PDF, image or direct download.

Your policy should match Australian law, not just Meta's rules. The OAIC explains that small businesses with annual turnover of $3 million or less are generally not covered by the Privacy Act, but health service providers are covered regardless of turnover. Clinics in particular should get the wording right.

A way to get leads into your CRM fast

Leads that sit inside Meta do nothing. Meta's help centre says lead information is only available on Meta for 90 days, so older leads cannot be downloaded. Meta describes CRM integration options for lead ads, including direct integrations and third-party tools. When you connect, store the Meta lead ID on each contact. Meta's CRM integration documentation says that for best results you should have the 15 to 17 digit Meta lead ID stored in your CRM, which lets you send outcomes back later.

Consent for follow-up

If you will email or text leads, add consent wording to the form. The ACMA says you need consent before sending marketing messages, and every message must identify you and offer an easy unsubscribe. Meta lets you add a custom disclaimer to your instant form for this.

What do you need before using a landing page?

  1. A fast, focused page. One offer, one action, and a form or calendar near the top on mobile.
  2. The Meta Pixel. Meta describes the Meta Pixel as JavaScript that tracks visitor activity on your website. Fire a Lead event when the form is submitted.
  3. The Conversions API. It sends the same events from your server or CRM, so fewer are lost. See how to set up the Meta Conversions API.
  4. UTM tags and hidden fields. Save which ad each lead came from on the CRM record. Our guide on tracking which ads bring clients shows how.
  5. A privacy policy that mentions tracking. The OAIC says privacy policies must clearly explain the use of third-party tracking pixels.
  6. Validation on the form. Check phone and email formats before the form submits.

Which should you use for your type of business?

Business typeGood starting pointWhy
Trades and home servicesInstant form (Higher Intent) with suburb and job type questionsSimple need, fast callback wins the job
Clinics and allied healthEither; landing page if you need to explain the serviceAdvertising rules limit claims, so plain information helps
Accounting, legal and finance firmsLanding page with a booking calendarBuyers compare firms and want to understand the process
AgenciesLanding page with qualifying questionsBudget and fit matter more than volume
Coaches and consultantsLanding page or a short video page before bookingHigher value offers need more trust before a call

These are starting points, not rules. The honest answer is to test both against the same audience and judge them on cost per booked call and cost per client, not cost per lead. Our guide to what a good cost per lead is in Australia shows how to set the target.

What we learned in our own business

A landing page gives you control, and control cuts both ways. We once added an honest 100-seat limit to a live event funnel. When it filled early one morning, the form silently refused every new registration for about two days, while roughly $450 to $500 of Meta ads kept sending clicks. Our automated ad tool saw zero leads and paused a new campaign as a "bad ad". If you own the page, you own its failures. We now test the form end to end before judging any ad, never cap or refuse sign-ups while ads run, and treat zero leads with steady page views as a broken funnel.

We also learned to validate at the form. A placeholder phone number we used in testing was texted about 43 times over several months from test and fake sign-ups. Format checks on phone and email, plus keeping test data out of live sends, fixed it.

How to run a fair test (hypothetical example)

The numbers below are invented to show the method. They are not benchmarks or client results.

MeasureInstant form (hypothetical)Landing page (hypothetical)
Ad spend$1,000$1,000
Leads5025
Cost per lead$20$40
Booked calls810
New clients24
Cost per client$500$250

In this made-up case, the form wins on cost per lead and loses on cost per client. In your business it could go the other way. Keep the creative, audience and budget the same, change only the destination, and wait until leads have had time to book and buy before you decide.

Frequently asked questions

Are Facebook lead forms better than landing pages?

Lead forms usually produce more leads at a lower cost per lead. Landing pages usually produce fewer leads with more intent. Test both and judge on cost per client.

Do I need a privacy policy for Facebook lead ads?

Yes. Meta says advertisers need a privacy policy on their business website or app to run lead ads, and the form links to it. The link cannot go to a PDF, image or direct download.

What is a Higher Intent form on Facebook?

It is an instant form type that adds a review step, so people can confirm their information before they submit. Expect fewer leads than the default More Volume type, with more considered submissions.

How do I get Facebook lead form leads into my CRM?

Use a direct CRM integration or a third-party connector, so each lead arrives in your CRM within moments. Store the Meta lead ID on every contact. Meta keeps lead information available for only 90 days.

Can I use both lead forms and a landing page?

Yes. Many businesses use instant forms for simple, urgent services and landing pages for higher value offers, or test both for the same offer. Keep tracking consistent so you can compare cost per client.
